Why we need to test a Gemstone?
When shopping for something as precious and rare as natural Gemstones, it’s important that the Gemstones include a Testing report from an independent laboratory. Through testing report we can understand the quality of gemstone like it is Natural, Synthetic, treated non treated, etc.
In modern times gemstones are identified by gemologists, who describe gems and their characteristics using technical terminology specific to the field of gemology. Gems are characterized in terms of refractive index, dispersion, specific gravity, hardness, cleavage, fracture and luster. They may exhibit pleochroism or double refraction. They may have luminescence and a distinctive absorption spectrum.
Gemstone pricing and value are governed by factors and characteristics on the quality of the gemstone. These characteristics include clarity, rarity, freedom of defects, beauty of the stone, as well as the demand for them. There are different pricing influencers for both colored gemstones, and for diamonds. The pricing on colored stones is determined by market supply-and-demand, but diamonds are more intricate. Diamond value can change based on location, time, and on the evaluations of diamond vendors.
Synthetic and artificial gemstones
Synthetic gemstones are distinct from imitation or simulated gems.
Synthetic gems are physically, optically and chemically identical to the natural stone, but are created in controlled conditions in a laboratory. Imitation or simulated stones are chemically different from the natural stone but may be optically similar to it; they can be glass, plastic, resins or other compounds.
Synthetic, cultured or lab-created gemstones are not imitations. For example, diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds have been manufactured in labs to possess identical chemical and physical characteristics to the naturally occurring variety. Synthetic (lab created) corundum, including ruby and sapphire, is very common and costs much less than the natural stones. Smaller synthetic diamonds have been manufactured in large quantities as industrial abrasives, although larger gem-quality synthetic diamonds are becoming available in multiple carats.
Terms and conditions governing the reports issued by OIGS
The gemological analysis of diamonds, precious stones and other Gemstones must be carried out by gemologists of many years experience in this field who have a keen sense of the professional code of ethics governing their work as well as a thorough knowledge of crystallographic, optical and physical phenomenon.
The identification of the various species and varieties of stones, the distinction between natural and synthetic material, as well as various treatment methods currently encountered are all very sensitive factors. More specifically for diamonds, the laws of refraction and dispersion of light, the related geometric data as well as knowledge of all aspects involved in the cutting process are essential. This gemological report is provided upon request of the customer and/or the owner of the gem.

In the event of any claim by the Client or any person for damage to the article(s), or damages resulting, directly or indirectly, from this Report, the liability of OIGS shall be limited to the amount it receives as a fee in connection with this Report.
OIGS operates as an independent laboratory and has no financial interest in the sale of and diamonds/jewelry.
This Report shall be governed by the Judicial system of the country where the report has been issued. Only the local law courts are competent in case of disputes.

Each and every Gemstone under test is examined by our Gemologists / Graders independently, first using the standard Gemological equipments, and then by scientific methods using sophisticated spectrometers. Therefore, every report issued is based on vast Gemological experience of the Gemologists / Graders along with scientific facts.
